Where Was I?

School got hard (my fault for taking history classes, where entire books are assigned on a week to week basis), so I ran out of time for everything. Something needed to get axed, and I picked writing

That was pretty stupid. Kick the one productive hobby I have? Bah.

Then one day I woke up vomiting blood and I had to go to the hospital. That was a fun couple of days. Turns out the blood vomiting wasn’t that serious, beyond, you know, vomiting blood. Something else entirely different was wrong. Oh joy!

I’m keeping the details private, but essentially I’ve had to radically alter my diet in order to stave of certain death.

Just in time for Christmas. Whatever.

Upon finally returning here after a few months of melancholy, I decided I’ve been gone far too long. Too much time in the ER, not enough time scribbling stupid stories.

I, uh, am not a fan of my own work. Not at all. I hate everything I’ve published so far. Rubbish! Crap! The flailings of a third grader who dares categorize himself with alumni such as Stephanie Meyer.

It all stays up though. A testament to my eternal shame and failure.

I’m going to start over. One shots can stay, whatever. The overarching Arkenheart story, however, is in desperate need of attention, retcon, rewrites, and outright obliteration. So I’m going to do just that, and hopefully version two will be much more coherent and suck slightly less. Doubtful, but I’ll be happier with it (I lie. It will still suck and I will still hate it.)

Well, fuck. Not much else to say is there?

Let’s get on with the crappy writing.

(Cataclysm thoughts for those interested.)

I’ve shifted my main entirely to paladin, primarily retribution spec. Arkenheart hit 85 less than 48 hours after Cataclysm launched, cause I’m just that hardcore. My mage has largely sat utterly ignored, though I did manage to pull him up to 81 about a week back on a whim. I’m just… not interested in magery anymore. Don’t really know why. Face smashing all the way from here on out, I think.

Retribution, however, was awful in PvP for quite some time. Survivability was crap, my heals were crap, no snare, no gap closers at all. The only thing I was good for was defensive support, mainly by giving freedom to other people and healing them with super powered Words of Glory.

It was a dark, dark time. A dark time us paladins had been predicting for months and months on the beta. (So I rolled a warrior, and it was stupidly OP. RIP warriors, may your nerfs be less stupid in the future.)

Hey, a few buffs later, and now ret paladins are actually on par with the other top classes. Some would say overpowered, but I just think those people haven’t had to treat ret paladins as a threat before, and now that paladins actually are threatening, they just cry nerf rather than learning2play.

Ret’s mobility is now very good, except against hunters/DKs/mages, where it’s still terrible. Fortunately blizzard seems to be pushing for all melee to have terrible mobility (for some bizarre reason), so I guess that’s fair.

Our damage is strong, though badly designed as its utterly reliant on RNG. It’s entirely possible for me to be out dpsd by a DK pet one arena, then utterly curbstomp a clothie in five globals the next. Frankly the entire idea of holy power is another example of “good idea, horrendous execution.”

Offhealing is still very strong, thankfully blizzard hasn’t nerfed that yet. They’re going to, I don’t know why. Offhealing is how I peel for my teammates. Other classes can stun/snare/CC enemies, I can’t. When my friends come under attack, the only option I have to save them is to heal them. Word of Glory is my peel.

And, of course, we finally get a defensive cooldown that isn’t absolute garbage. Hurray and enjoy it before it gets nerfed, because god knows paladins aren’t allowed to not be terrible. Except Holy, which is exempt all the time for some reason.

If anyone is interested beyond this at all, ask away in the comments. I pretty much only do PvP on ret paladin these days though.

Feh. Enough pointless chatter. Good health to all, and may my stories entertain you at least somewhat while you poop.

Hey! Glad to see you back and that everything is more or less ok. Real life does need to take precedence. Looking forward to more of your horrendous writings. lol

You aren’t missing much with your mage. Arcane sucks for DPS, but frost is at least a bit more interesting to play. Fire makes me think I am a warlock, having to keep track of DoTs so I can cast a meaningful Combustion, but the AoE can be fun with instant Flamestrikes and all. Unfortunately, Fire is still RNG dependent, so I can see a 5k DPS swing from boss to boss. All the movement fights cut into the DPS as well, even with the talent to cast Scorch on the run.

On a side note, I did join the dark side and moved my gnome to a goblin. I still run into LoS issues on steps even though I am a little taller. lol

    Glad to have you back!

We’ve been saying that fire is far too dependent on RNG since, what, early wrath beta? Good to see that’s still broken I guess, heh. Still, as high as 5k dps swings? Good lord.

I’m a big fan of goblins myself. I love their animations and voices. Haven’t played one on live, but I leveled a few on the beta.

    Heya Euripedes,
Glad to see you posting again. If I had been slightly less lazy, an absence of 3+ months on my blogroll might have gotten you cut………awwww, who am I kidding? Your stories are entertaining and poignant, much like Tamarind’s, so I doubt I’d cut either one of you, in the off chance you came back.

    • Euripedes says:

At the very least I’d still write stuff for my own enjoyment, the type of fanfic style stories I’d like to read.
No harm in posting such things, is there? If others enjoy it, then hooray! If others don’t, well, no harm no foul.

I am so glad to see you are back. It’s strange how you can worry about someone you have never met or seen. Anyway, so happy you are alive and back. My mage has also been partially abandoned in favor of my DK who does not have to sit 40 min in the queue as dps. I will be excited to see your next story.

    • Euripedes says:

Everyone loves their DKs! They’re bizarrely well designed for being the newest class in WoW.

You were right to worry, to be blunt. Things got pretty scary for a while there, but I’m on the road to recovery and not so terrible health. Good health is beyond my reach, but I should be able to manage average health.

  4. repgrind says:

Welcome back! Sorry to hear you’re having health problems, but definitely glad you are not going to die yet. 😛

  5. DarthRegis says:

Yes, a diet of eating babies isn’t that good for the tummy.

I still ❤ my mage. Pretty happy with Frost these days. Although my DK is kind of my main for guild-related fun.

Anyway, glad to see you're doing better and I hope both your hisotry and health get to a state of dance-tastic.

    • Euripedes says:

DKs are in excellent shape this expansion so far, both in PvP and PvE. Though to be fair, so are mages. Frost has been extremely powerful, and fire produces incredible numbers in raiding, even with RNG swings.

I still like my mage, and derp around with it every now and then. It’s just I like my paladin far better, and I don’t really have time or drive to devote to having multiple progressed characters.

      • DarthRegis says:

Yes, I do alright tanking with my DK. Although I STILL haven’t gotten used to the fact that Blood Boil doesn’t put the melee damage debuff up any more. That said, the fact that Plague Strike does now kind of takes away from the Diseaseless tanking people we using before.

Aaaaanyway, for me, it’s easy to have two characters on the go, as we haven’t really made it anywhere past 5-man heroics with the guild yet. Attendance and interest seems to be at a low.

  6. Adam says:

lol just as i was about to delete this page from my bookmarks, TADA two new posts!

glad to see you are slowly progressing to “average health” and haven’t died a horrible painful bloody death C:

  7. Torumin says:

We missed you, Rip! Good to hear you’re alive 🙂

  8. koalabear21 says:

Glad to hear that you are doing better. Health & special diets are tough to live with. I am very excited to hear about new updates to your awesome stories and am sitting in anticipation. 🙂

Good luck with the recovery and keeping on track!

    • Euripedes says:

Not as hard as I thought, turns out. Excising things like pizza was surprisingly easy, and it took just over a month to completely kick my caffeine habit. I used to drink close to two litres of pop (soda, or whatever slang you want to use) every day, now I don’t really drink anything besides skim milk and water.

      And cooking healthy? Easy, learn2stirfry.

  9. SpiritusRex says:

    Well, it’s about fucking time!

Glad you’re back. I’m not so sure that you shouldn’t be trying out your magery again – fire is king, which means a lot of ash strewn everywhere. Can’t blame you on the pally, though, as I rolled one on a lark about a week ago and can’t seem to stop playing him – leveling via dungeons from the 0’s-7’s and then pwning the crap out of people for the 7-0. Almost as much fun as reading your stuff.

Anyways, Rip, welcome back and I’ll end it the way I started it – ’bout fucking time.

    • Euripedes says:

More than anything, I like the feel and aesthetic of playing a paladin.
I don’t mean that from a game mechanics point of view, but more of a mythos and lore point of view.
The light that pierces the darkness, the shield of truth and sword of justice that fights evil wherever it is… good times!

  10. GHOSTKID says:

Good God, It’s nice to see you are back.

Say, “Hi,” to Vox and Jo for me!

  11. Plyrx says:

This is eons too late, but OH MY GOD WELCOME BACK TO THE INTERNET EURI! (I just remembered you hate that name. :D)

Sad to hear you abandoned magery, I’m still pretty much devoted to my main, Appala. I’m leveling a DK tank and a rogue, as well, the DK more for my guild than myself. I’ll give pally a shot tonight.

Sorry to hear about your workload and blood vomiting, not a combination I’d like to go through if I can avoid it. And while you’re revising Arkenheart, can it have- to not mince words- less sex? It’s obvious that due to her background it’s pretty in character, but still… if possible.

    • Euripedes says:

I’ll take your request for less sexy times into consideration, but that’s probably not possible. I never, ever intend to actually write a real sex sequence, merely lead ups to such things, and afterwards.
I’ll excise what I can, but early on, it’s like asking Arken to not say “fuck” so much. It’s just far too out of character. The rampant, casual approach to sex was only ever intended as backstory anyway. As the plots progress it tones down by itself.

  13. Rainbowsaur says:

You seem to suffer from a severe case of the Dunning Kruger effect (which I first red about on CQQ, ironically enough?)

“The competent do not realize their own competence, because they are competent. They see greater skill in others, recognize their own failures and mistakes, and thus try to improve. Inevitably they do improve, becoming much, much better than where they used to be.”

You fail to see what for a brilliant writer you are. I’d force, as head of the pupil board, everyone at school to read some of your work and especially “The Bible according to Arkenheart” which (I know I copy your words again, but there’s no better way to describe it) amuses the shit out of me, if it wasn’t a Catholic school.

Anyway, long story short, welcome back!
